Brighty came to our farm as "boot" in a horse trade.  We got the best end of the deal! Brighty was 8 months old and still on his dam, when he suddenly found himself at our farm.   He was not pleased with the new situation.  We were thrilled to get to know him and learn about donkeys.  Brighty soon found that humans had treats and grain.  Then he learned that humans were also good at "body massages".  He loves to be pet and loved on.

Brighty is truely a people donkey.  He goes to preschools and gives rides.  On special days he will bray for the kids and they go crazy!  I think the more the kids squeal and laugh, the longer he brays!  His whole body gets to shaking.

Brighty has always been in the field with our riding horses and everyone was okay with the arrangement.  Brighty knew his place in the herd.  He was not dominant, but not at the bottom either. Then we brought home Natalie and Autumn, our first mini mares.  I thought he would like to be in with friends that were closer to the same size.  Boy, was I wrong! Brighty was terrified of the mini girls.  They would chase and kick him and he would cower in the corner. So he went back to the main field.  Then in the spring of 2007, we had three mini mares and no stallion.  So we put the little girls in the main field, which was also home to our Curly Stallion and Brighty. When the girls came in heat, Danny would smell and flirt but walk away.  So I had a talk with Brighty encouraging him to go meet the girls and explaining how much I really needed him to do this job.  After a couple of cycles, he started hanging out with the girls and nature took over. The spring of 2008 brought us two wonderful mule foals; thanks to Brighty.
